Do atheists really want everyone to turn out like these idiots who are posting on here and the dad who had nothing better to do than harass the chaplain? "Christianity is the bloodiest religion out there"??? that guy has apparently never taken world history. Self-worshiping men (atheists) are the most murderous group in the history of mankind!

Wouldn't this have been illegal for a public school? So I thought it must be a private, religious school. The chaplain was clearly ok with pressuring attendence to a religious event. This wouldn't be happening in today's real world, so the conversation seems fictional.

Of course, I do live in the south where it expected of you to be a christian. I am atheist and my daughter is agnostic. She is free to believe whatever she feels is right. She was highly upset. She felt that this was forced and it was a deception. I didn't think they could do this but apparently, they can. So…what do ya do?
Hi. Jesus here. Just checking in, sorry I took so long to get back, traffic was a bitch. And what’s up with all these weirdos claiming to be my followers? I left simple instructions: love one another, fuck like rabbits, and never be afraid of anything ever. But no, you HAD to listen to power hungry lunatics tripping on mushrooms. And what exactly is this BIBLE?
I never approved this stuff!!! HEY!!! I never walked on water!! *flips page* I DIE??? What the hell man? *flips pages* And who’s PAUL?
Oh come on everyone… you are taking this all too seriously. This letter is part of a long series of letters that this guy, who I find very funny, writes to all sorts of people on all sorts of topics. Yes, it's inflammatory, and yes he didn't handle the situation they way one should in real life, but that's not the point. It's supposed to be over the top to get a laugh.
A little confused here — can someone fill us in on just where they have public schools that have “school chaplains”? Here in the good ol’ US of A, as full of religious nutters as we are I don’t think they can get away with that. Even in the Bible Belt, public schools have to (officially, at least) keep their noses out of student’s religion.
I believe everything should be taken in moderation, including religion. Christianity itself preaches kindness to others and loving everybody whether they love you or not. The fail part of Christianity is when religious extremists commit mass murder (the crucades?) for ignoring the big picture and being anal about the details. If you take it for what it is, Christianity can be good, and so can any religion i suppose. David was the asshole for sure here. This should have ended after the second email when Daryl said something like "look if you don't want your child to go, then just tick the 'not going' box." After which, David continued pushing the subject and making fun of him. I think anybody who believes word-for-word what David said… thank god you don't believe in Christianity XD
Who the hell names their kid Seb? a form of staphylococcal enterotoxin that has been used as an incapacitating agent in biological warfare [syn: staphylococcal enterotoxin B]
Nice. David….hmmmm where did that name come from? Ironic.
Haha, good one! Those Christian chaplains offering "inspiring hope-filled plays" are to be reviled as much as those Scientologists offering "free personality tests" to rope in believers.
Though I think that christianity is one of the great evils of the human race, David Thorne was really just being a dick. the chaplain was being very open and polite, and welcomed the fact that David did not want his kid seeing it. It's unfortunate how much more fanatical the athirst was the then the christian. All I thought after reading it was, David had child hood issues that he was taking out on a guy who may or may not also have had them.
The most epic win I have seen this year. David Thorne is a hero…not to mention absolutely correct in everything he said. I laughed so hard that the tears are still drying on my cheeks!
Who cares? The religious can never be reasoned with anyway. That's why they're religious. The premarked "yes" wasn't a mistake. If you think it was you're a moron.
You really are an idiot. He states in the side panel that it is a pulic school – not a religious school – and that it is against the law to preach in public schools. Australia has laws on this and Darryl is bypassing them.
To those saying that you are a jackass if you try and push your beliefs on someone else, isn't that exactly what the parent is trying to do in this case? Is he not just aggressively pushing his own beliefs on the school chaplain?
While I do agree that it is rather stupid and wrong to push your own views (religious or otherwise) on someone who does not believe the same, I don't think you can defend the parent in this situation, as he is doing just that. Completely uncalled for, and immature abuse is all it is.
sometimes the only option left is to fight fire with fire. what the parent has done has angered alot of christians profusly has it not? and your sitting there knowing that the chaplin did the same yet you say nothing about that? the christian volenteer threw the first stone and therefore completly deserves what he recieved from the angry parent.
The difference is that the chaplin is pushing a belief where as the father is pushing a fact. I'd be furius if I sent my child to public school and had some religious nut job attempting to brainwash him or her. If you believe the box was checked accidentaly than you're nieve. The father brought up numerous good points on why learning right and wrong outside of the church is more logical. Be a good person because its the right thing, not because some fucking red dude is going to ass rape you for eternity if your bad.
Why are so many people so fucking stupid. Sure I'd love to believe in Santa still, it's a nice thought, but unfortunately I'm over the age of 6 and have formed critical thinking skills.
David was in the wrong in this situation. Darryl sent a permission slip out, so parents could make the choice as to whether their child would attend the event. Darryl did make a mistake on the permission slip by having the first box already checked, but this is a simple mistake.
David was more aggressive and "pushy" with his beliefs and purposely worded them in a way to be offensive. To believe in a religion is to have faith and believe that the teachings of that religion are fact. This then means that opposing teaching are incorrect. The same idea goes for atheism. The believe that a deity does not exist, and thus align oneself with no religion, is to believe that the teachings of religions are wrong.
David, instead of being courteous in the situation, decided to make fun of Darryl's religion. Darryl mentioned that it "…teaches a set of ethics that are sadly not taught by parents nowadays." Christianity teaches to be kind to others. One cannot blame the religion and the followers of it based on those who claim to belong to the religion yet do not practice it teachings in whole. This is the equivalent of having prejudice against an entire race based on your interaction with members of that race, regardless if the majority of your interactions were negative. David's behavior is this situation showed a lack of at least one ethical belief that Christianity teaches.
It may be true that the Chaplin is to legally refer to himself as a "Christian Volunteer." I am not familiar with the law in the area. Whether Darryl purposely did not change his e-mail signature, was not informed of the law by his boss, or simply forgot though cannot be determined.
David could have handled the situation in a much more professional manner though, and even pointed out his grievances. A simple e-mail stating he did not approve of his child attending the event unless there would also be an event to "balance" it would have been appropriate. He could have also mentioned his grievance with the check box being already checked, and the use of "School Chaplin" without being rude or disrespectful.
I have to say that Darryl is in the wrong in this situation.
The non-religious cannot complain they feel threatened, harassed, or offended by the religious and then do the same.
Although I agree that David could have been more tactful (for lack of a better term) through the emails, I still believe that he was right to argue his point. It is true that checking the box was a mistake but, as someone who works part time making thousands of copies a week for a university, it's a mistake that can be easily and should be corrected. The university I work for would be sued for making such a mistake. And, yes, there is an infinite difference between university and what I can assume to be elementary school level. However, the fact remains that not everyone agrees on religion and, at such a young age, it's not right to push views of any kind (Christianity, atheism, paganism, etc.) onto others' children. Therefore, as Darryl admitted he had noticed the mistaken checkbox, it would have been easy to just reprint them.
I'm sorry to say that, although the core teachings of Jesus may teach people to be kind, Christianity does no such thing. Have you ever said an ill word of your parents? Well, according to Exodus 21:17, you should be put to death. Is it alright to stone a woman if she's raped? According to Deuteronomy 22:23 it is. Do you think men should be able to sell their daughters as slaves? In Exodus 21:7 it's sanctioned. Has anyone you ever known worked on a Sunday? Well, as in Exodus 35:2, they should be put to death. Have you ever watched football or do you know anyone who plays football or do you know anyone who even likes watching the sport? According to Leviticus 11:7, touching a dead pig's skin makes you unclean. Most importantly: lying with another man is an abomination. Saying that some of these verses are old fashioned is ignoring two specific things in a list of many: the hypocrisy of choosing what to believe in and then saying the Bible is the ultimate truth as well as the constant hate crimes against LGBT people.
Christians shouldn't be able to choose which verses they want out of a bible that is "all truth" and which verses they don't. Jesus did teach to be kind and understanding but that's not what I hear when I see in the news rallies against gay rights (whether that be marriage or just holding down a job). People get in the way of religion and distort it to mean what they want it to. People also choose what to follow. Many Christians (not all, of course) choose to follow the peaceful teachings and then hide behind the pretense of "ours is such a peaceful religion" while they prosecute and murder those that don't agree with them.
David's an adult. He didn't necessarily behave as such. But, let me be frank, who the hell does when they're pissed off? Don't tell me that, every single time you've ever been mad at or, frankly, threatened by someone you took the high road and said something along the lines of "I'm sorry our opinions differ" and then walked away. The only difference here is that David's douchebaggery was publicized and yours wasn't. If I were David, I'd be pretty pissed too. Whether it was Christianity or evolution (which, in my experience, is optional. Sorry if it's different where you went to school), if I didn't agree with it and my child was already checked off for permission to go, I'd be fuming. Like I said before, it would have been extraordinarily easy to simply print off another batch without the mistake, but Darryl didn't choose to do that. Instead, he chose to push his religious beliefs upon someone else's child.
I agree with David's anger even if he did act like an ass. He is not in the wrong in this situation. He is simply reacting to a mistake that was not rectified and, according to what I can gather from Darryl, could have been solved easily. He may not have been tactful but who can say they're always tactful when their values are being threatened? Christians and atheists alike should be able to agree that they don't like their values threatened.
And the non-religious are the ones being prosecuted, not the religious. In my country, 70% of people know there's a God of some sort. That's "know". It does not include "are not sure but think there's a God". These 70% could easily take away the rights of atheists. There are significant movements to take away their voting rights, any job that involves government or schooling, and even their basic human rights. This is all because, if they don't have a God to tell them what's wrong and right, they can't have any sort of ethics. I feel as if this example was some sort of defense in a world that's highly religious. When the numbers are stacked against you, there's no way you can't feel threatened unless you're ignorant or uncaring. Religious people may feel threatened in singular incidents but, in reality, they tower over the atheists in both numbers and power.
David is in the right.
Jackass is indeed better than someone who pushes their views (however subtly) upon children who aren’t their own.
". The same idea goes for atheism. The believe that a deity does not exist, and thus align oneself with no religion, is to believe that the teachings of religions are wrong."
Please oh please.. do not fall into this trap. Atheism is NOT a belief. It is the lack of a belief.
In the same manner how can the lack of a skill to repair something be a skill in itself?
In the same manner, having nothing is NOT having something.
Repeat after me. Atheism is NOT a belief. Clear?
While Atheism is the lack of a belief, one must point out that to "believe" something is to hold an idea as personal fact. Atheists hold as a personal fact that no deity exists. Therefore, while Atheism is the lack of belief in a deity, it is the belief that no deity exists. You simply cannot compare this to a skill, as they are completely different concepts.
How would an atheist explain his or her stance on the existence of a deity without using the words "I believe" or something synonymous for the phrase in the context of the explanation?
Additional, your reply though does not refute the fact that the lack of belief of a deity is to believe that teachings involved a deity are incorrect.
I don't say that "f_uck you" comes to my ind when readin gyour reaction, nor that you are a total moron. But you should have at least recognised the HUMOUR in the replies, that religious tarts like the "Christian Volunteer" fails to see, blinded by his "faith". By that way, thank god, i'm a very religious devotee of Pikawokki.
no… it's just sad. The poor chaplain (which obviously indicates that this dumbass is sending his child to a religious private school of some sort) was just trying to be friendly and this douchebag is wasting his time. You don't have to accept religion, but you also don't have to try and make somebody feel stupid for believing it. Unfortunately this guy thought he was sounding really clever and I'm sure he thinks he's way too smart for religion, when in the end, he's just a dumbass. I say the chaplain comes out sounding like a champ! And a little advice to this stupid father, if you don't want your child being indoctrinated, than don't send him to a religious private school with a chaplain… idiot!
Teaching religion as science/fact: Jackass.
Expecting others to accept your religion: Jackass.
Pushing for others your own religion: Jackass.
Christianity as your religion: Brainwashed. (Ref.: Christianity is the most bloodiest, most cruel religion of them all)
Believing into infinite, all capable being in the first place: Moronic.
David's cool, and thinks with his own brains. 10 points for him, and this "school chaplain" Epic Fail points.
Interesting… it sounds like you are attempting to push your religion onto these people with statements like "believing in god is moronic"
So then you would be: a Jackass
And you think that expecting people to accept your religion is being a jackass? Yeah I think you might be right. I can only hope that we can all be persecuted and ridiculed to no end for our own personal beliefs at some point in our lives. I know! Let's start with atheists!
Atheism is not a religion. Lacking belief does not qualify as being religious. Unless you think abstinence is a form of sex.
People who misunderstand the definition of words: Idiots
People who trust everything their church leaders indoctrinate them with in regards to Atheists: Idiots
The last one which you say is moronic, please, I'd like to know your logic here. I see it as, if the big bang happened, something must have happened before. As we know, you can neither create or destroy matter. That being said, something has to be eternal, and if we know that this Universe has a starting point, then it is not matter that is eternal. Something must have created the matter.
Another good point I've heard from someone. If you found a watch on the ground, would you assume that it just assembled itself, or that someone created it?
The universe is a linear working machine, just like a watch.
Following this logic, what created the "eternal" that then created the matter/universe? This is called an infinite regressive. Anything that you say started existence, also could be questioned with: "Well, where did THAT come from then?"
So, is it more likely to believe a supernatural being, which we have no evidence has ever existed or continues to exist (and no, the bible does not count, so many contradictions, holes, translations, interpretations… it isn't even good fiction) or is it better to subscribe to a scientific explanation, that actually has theories based on evidence we have collected/witnessed? Occam's razor: the simplest solution is usually the correct one.
Also, your reference to the watch. That is called "The Watchmaker Analogy" and is most prominently associated with William Paley. Go to wikipedia and you'll find a nice long list of "Criticisms" pointing out flaws in this theory. You could also check out the books The Blind Watchmaker or The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, for further detail/criticism of this theory.
you idiot, before talking about the big bang, make sure you know what the fuck you're talking about, and its ENERGY that cannot be created or destroyed, and we know that there was something before the big bang, you know what it was? all the same matter and energy that is now in the universe but it all got compressed into a single point and the reaction of all the energy in the universe in one spot made a ridiculously huge explosion sending all that condensed matter and energy all over the universe.
the universe is not a linear working machine, it is cyclical. one day, billions, maybe trillions of years in the future it will happen again as the celestial bodies in the universe attract each other because of the gravity created by the mass they occupy. They will inevitably all be attracted to a single point again, and the process will repeat.
I'm going to have to side with David on this one, as the "School Chaplain" is a law-breaker who continued to engage in criminality even after being informed of his errors. Law in Southern Australia holds that the title "School Chaplain" is illegal to use.
Jackass > Criminal
David wins.
ps: In all fairness, he did make some really good points about ethics and balance in education, even if he wasn't following it himself, that the Christian Volunteer failed to respond to. Then again, maybe it's not such a big deal that he's didn't live up to his own standards, as hypocrisy is all the rage nowadays. On the other hand, it's a real asshole thing to pre-check the permission slip, so it's more like:
The parent implies he has ethics based on “the right thing to do” – but demonstrates he is purposely cruel. Bravo to the chaplain, he is demonstrating his ethics in the best possible way. The child could really benefit from attending the Easter pageant and from spending time with the chaplain.
but wait a minute. don't video games and tv teach kids all their bad behaviors nowadays??? and isn't it that every time a child tries something stupid people say it's "because they learned it on tv"???
so what's to stop this child from watching the play, and then having his friends crucify him and place him in a cave with a rock in front of it, because according to the play he's going to just wake up and walk around again and be the son of god??? yeah i don't think they should be allowed to show such dangerous plays that could give kids crazy ideas.
The parent here sounds like an ass. I wouldn't send my kid to a religious play either, but the chaplain or whatever he is was at least polite. Also, lots of dragging on about unrelated things (the whole playstation rant seemed idiotic)
bull shit, you are not agnostic, if you were then you would be questioning what the child could actualy benifet from attendting the play, which is nothing. there is no moral in the story of easter and is completely useless to the child's education. also you called the parent cruel well then if the parent is cruel then the chaplain is a power hungry decieving bastard who wants to push his own religion on to impressionable kids by having them attend a christan play while he works in a PUBLIC school. that is clearly an abuse of power so if thats "the best possible way" for him to show is ethics then your objectivity on this mattered is terribly skewed
This is freakin awesome! I want to bear David Thorne's next ten babies. Ten babies so we can do this another ten times when those kids go through school.
Oh, except that I'm a man. Can someone loan me some ova?
The "Christian Volunteer" didn't HAVE to reply to any of his emails. And you can't say someone is a dumbass when they are clearly just being a smartass. No part of that was dumb, it was brilliant. Just because you disagree doesn't mean the guy was in the wrong.
I should hope the parents are involved in thier childrens life enough to teach them that the crucifiction of Christ happened that way because Jesus is the son of God and if you try to reinact it it's not gonna work because we are the children of God.
Religion is important in everyone's life and for him to bagger the Chaplin just shows that he has issues he needs to resolve within himself. He is obviously educated by his word choice and examples – he just needs to put all that yappin in a more positive direction instead of on an innocent bystandard.
87Sugarbush2u's son/childMarch 28, 2010 at 12:11 AM
If Jesus was the son of God, doesn’t that make him God’s child? Therefor, if we’re are children of God, just like Jesus is/was/will be(not sure if time is cyclical) than can’t we all get crucified and rise from the dead and out of a boulder blocked cave?
Jesus was not only the Son of God, he was said to be a form of God as well. This explains why, even though we are all children of God, we can not rise from the dead.
either he is the son of god, or he is not. he can't be the son of god in one sentence until somebody shows the flaw of the logic, and then suddenly be a "form of god". i love how many people just "word vomit" what is force fed to them by a pedophile at church, but when you come back with logical questions, they start tripping over their own words, because they haven't actually thought about it themselves. blind leading the blind i tell ya.

After which, David continued pushing the subject and making fun of him.
Ironic.
Seb is the Egyptian god of the Earth, aka Geb or Keb.
I think Sebastian is most likely.
This guy is pathetic, check the box "no" and go waste someone else's time.
I want you to tell jesus he is a penis wrinkle to his face,You know…religeon aside, david is a penis himself, one that I would like to torture slowly.
Haha, good one! Those Christian chaplains offering "inspiring hope-filled plays" are to be reviled as much as those Scientologists offering "free personality tests" to rope in believers.
It invites you to click to enlarge but the magnification factor is 1:1 which is unhelpful!
Why do all posts like this look alike? This is soooooo fake.
Entertaining and humorous. Praise God and the Easter Bunny for making this lively conversation which pleases my funny bone.
Don't have to know jack about religion to know that guy was being a pain in the ass
If you think it was you're a moron.
i fully agree!
Has nobody else noticed that this is doctored?
David Thorne's email on the 11th of March at 5:09am occurs before the email he is replying to.
you dont actualy think that any of this stuff is real. its just ment to be funny and to spark comment wars, which in my opinion it succeeded in both
Oh man, he really stuck it to the RELIGIOUS ESTABLISHMENT with those long-winded, pointless, unfunny emails.
While I totally agree that Daryl is in the wrong here and action should be taken, David comes across like an immature, cliche ragin' atheist.
By that way, thank god, i'm a very religious devotee of Pikawokki.
boooooooooo
you suck
Dad's the best, religious brainwasher's a total ass. The end.
This makes me sad
but it is sooooooooooooooooo funny!! it makes me very very very very very happy. :D
no… it's just sad.
This makes me happy
…jackass
Atheism is not a religion. Lacking belief does not qualify as being religious. Unless you think abstinence is a form of sex.
People who misunderstand the definition of words: Idiots
People who trust everything their church leaders indoctrinate them with in regards to Atheists: Idiots
Does it matter? = Idiot.
They will inevitably all be attracted to a single point again, and the process will repeat.
you're fucking dumb
Meh. While I'm all for people getting into these little fail email wars – the dad is the ass in this exchange – not the chaplain.
Jackass > Criminal Asshole
Damn David is such an A hole!
The parent implies he has ethics based on “the right thing to do” – but demonstrates he is purposely cruel. Bravo to the chaplain, he is demonstrating his ethics in the best possible way. The child could really benefit from attending the Easter pageant and from spending time with the chaplain.
And I’m agnostic.
Spending time with the chaplain? I believe the Catholic church has shown us what spending time with chaplains gets you!
but wait a minute. don't video games and tv teach kids all their bad behaviors nowadays??? and isn't it that every time a child tries something stupid people say it's "because they learned it on tv"???
so what's to stop this child from watching the play, and then having his friends crucify him and place him in a cave with a rock in front of it, because according to the play he's going to just wake up and walk around again and be the son of god??? yeah i don't think they should be allowed to show such dangerous plays that could give kids crazy ideas.
very nicely played sir.
The parent here sounds like an ass. I wouldn't send my kid to a religious play either, but the chaplain or whatever he is was at least polite. Also, lots of dragging on about unrelated things (the whole playstation rant seemed idiotic)
It only seemed 'idiotic' to you because you have the IQ of a tennis ball.
Respect is earned not given, and the chaplain clearly deserves none, so that is what David gave him.
bull shit, you are not agnostic, if you were then you would be questioning what the child could actualy benifet from attendting the play, which is nothing. there is no moral in the story of easter and is completely useless to the child's education. also you called the parent cruel well then if the parent is cruel then the chaplain is a power hungry decieving bastard who wants to push his own religion on to impressionable kids by having them attend a christan play while he works in a PUBLIC school. that is clearly an abuse of power so if thats "the best possible way" for him to show is ethics then your objectivity on this mattered is terribly skewed
meh…
Jesus was such a penis wrinkle
wow your pretty cool for saying that!… freakin idiot
You have summed up my opinions exactly.
I hope this is real :)
Haha, while it's rude to harass people for any reason (in my own opinion of course), he is quite the comedian.
This is freakin awesome! I want to bear David Thorne's next ten babies. Ten babies so we can do this another ten times when those kids go through school.
Oh, except that I'm a man. Can someone loan me some ova?
–
Greg
hi,fucking larious,
i wish i would have done this……
Sure, I'll be right ova. Not the left one, though, I'm keeping that one.
Read the emails moron. It clearly states "public school". (in the 3:36pm email)
did you even read the emails you fucktard?
If Jesus was the son of God, doesn’t that make him God’s child? Therefor, if we’re are children of God, just like Jesus is/was/will be(not sure if time is cyclical) than can’t we all get crucified and rise from the dead and out of a boulder blocked cave?
Logic>you
Jesus was not only the Son of God, he was said to be a form of God as well. This explains why, even though we are all children of God, we can not rise from the dead.
also because we're not zombies. Praise the Zombie Lord!
either he is the son of god, or he is not. he can't be the son of god in one sentence until somebody shows the flaw of the logic, and then suddenly be a "form of god". i love how many people just "word vomit" what is force fed to them by a pedophile at church, but when you come back with logical questions, they start tripping over their own words, because they haven't actually thought about it themselves. blind leading the blind i tell ya.
